Jamaica Independence Festival Village goes west
The National Stadium in Kingston will not be the only venue rallying the Festival fever this Independence week as Western Jamaica will celebrate Jamaica 55 with its own three-day Independence Village at the Closed Harbour Beach (Dump Up Beach) in Montego Bay St James.
Running from Friday, August 4 to Sunday August 6, the Western Village will give Kingston's Festival Village a run for its money, featuring rides and attractions, display booths and promotional displays, a Kiddies Village, a food court and nightly concerts. Beginning at noon daily, all Western Village events are free of cost.
The village opens to the public on Friday, and in addition to promotional booths and craft items, will feature a traditional Jamaican food court.
An opening ceremony at 6 p.m. will officially start the Western Village. Immediately following that will be the Festival Bandwagon Concert, featuring local talents from the west.
Western Village Day Two will feature a visual arts exhibition and the opening of the Kiddies Village, in addition to other scheduled activities.
A lunch-hour concert will also feature more western Jamaica talents, beginning at noon; while Bam Bam, a free oldies concert featuring reggae artists Admiral Bailey, George Nooks and other local talents, will begin at 7 p.m.
An Independence Road March from the Independence Civic Ceremony at Montego Bay's Sam Sharpe Square to Closed Harbour Beach will mark the beginning of Day Three.
The village will again feature a lunch hour concert, visual arts exhibition and Kiddies Village, and will close out with an Independence Grand Gala Concert and Fireworks show featuring international reggae recording artistes Ernie Smith, Bounty Killa, Romain Virgo, Morgan's Heritage, and Ikaya, beginning at 6 p.m.
