Lifestyle & Health - Should I be afraid of getting tested?
My boyfriend wants us to get engaged for the new year, but on condition that we both get tested for HIV.
Counsellor, I am afraid. Do I have any reason to be afraid of an HIV test?
Dear Fearful Girlfriend,
No, there are no physical risks, but you have to be prepared for an answer that may change your life forever.
Many people experience shock, anger, distress and depression when they find out they are HIV-positive.
Many people fear they will experience prejudice or discrimination if it becomes known that they are HIV-infected, or even that they are being tested for HIV.
This is why nobody would be tested for HIV without first talking to an experienced counsellor.
