AIDS Affair : Do I have an STI?

January 17, 2017

Dear Counsellor,

I'm 14 years old. I have had sex only once and that is about three months ago. I'm now having lower abdominal pain and a thick smelly discharge coming from my vagina.

Do you think I could be infected with a sexual infection?

Sweet Teen

Dear Sweet Teen,

Yes, you could get a sexually transmitted infection if the person you had sex with was infected. You must see a doctor or visit a health centre right away.

Germs that live in body fluids like semen, vaginal secretions, or blood may cause sexually transmitted infections.

These germs can enter your body through the vagina, the mouth, the anus, open sore or cuts. Some germs, like those that cause herpes or genital warts, can even infect you through the skin of the genitals or anywhere on the body.
