Soup is a great option for a family's main meal, is easy on the budget, and is healthy. Soups are easy-to-make, flavourful dishes that can be enjoyed any time of day, any day of the year. Here are six great tips to make a great soup

1. Use leftovers from previous meals

Leftover veggies, meats, and beans are great ingredients to add to your soup if you're crunched for time, or if you just want to give your soup a great start. Using leftovers will save money, avoid waste of foods, and add a variety of flavours to your soup mix.

2. Add bones for density

Bones are a great way to add natural meaty flavours to soups. When stewed, bones also give soups a thicker, smoother consistency. Using parts like chicken back, feet, and necks are perfect options.

3. Add veggies for kids

When soups contain vegetables, the broth contains nutritional content. Picky kids will get their daily servings without even knowing it! Veggies can also be purÈeed or chopped up to hide their natural form.

4. Never let soup boil

Boiling soup often ruins the ingredients, broth, or consistency all together; meats also will become tough if cooked over a roiling boil. Allow soups to simmer gently and cook over the course of time. This allows ingredients to stew and combine their flavours naturally.

5. Taste soups with the proper utensils

Tasting your recipe is always tempting and needed, so choosing the proper tasting tool is crucial. Silver and wooden utensils often taint flavours due to chemical make-up and saturation. The best tasting tool to use is stainless steel.

6. Remove fat naturally

Fat contains flavour that is sometimes irreplaceable. When cooking meats that contain fat, the majority of the fat may float to the top of the pot. Remove excess, buoyant fat by simply placing a lettuce leaf on top of your soup. The fat will float to the top, into the lettuce leaf, allowing easy and natural removal.
