Check-up: How can I treat my rough hands?

Petra works at a restaurant, and her hands have to be in a lot of water. Her hands have become very rough even though she uses hand lotion a lot. She asks Lifeline to suggest some easy ways to overcome her problem.

 

Well, prevention is better than cure, so:

- Wash hands with lukewarm water; hot or cold will injure the skin.

- Avoid getting your hands wet when possible.

- When washing or wetting hands is unavoidable, use a mild soap.

- Wear cotton gloves while working in the garden and rubber gloves when in the kitchen.

- Protect your hands from chemicals.

- Apply hand cream and moisturiser before going to bed at nights, and if the problem is bad, cover the hands with cotton gloves before going to bed.

- Drink a lot of water to keep the skin generally hydrated.

Several factors can cause dry hands, including dry air, cold weather, sun exposure, excessive handwashing, keeping them in water for too long, harmful chemicals, and overuse of soap bars. Wear gloves. Sometimes, medical skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis can also be present, which may need medical treatment.

Give your hands the proper skin nourishment to overcome the problem.

- Use olive oil. The antioxidants and fatty acids contained help keep dry hands moist and supple. Shea butter can also be massaged into the hands to hydrate and soften them. Use several times daily.

- Mix oatmeal with honey, and massage the hands with this mixture 2-3 times weekly.

- Apply extra virgin coconut oil on both hands, and massage for five minutes at bedtime. Put the hands in cotton gloves overnight.

- Avocado can also be used for a daily massage of the hands.

- Rub milk cream on the hands daily for five minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.

- Rub honey on the hands twice daily and massage. Leave for 10 minutes.

- Cut fresh aloe vera and apply the gel to the hands. Massage gently, then leave the substance in place for 10 minutes 1-2 times daily.

- Apply Vaseline or petroleum jelly to the hands at night and massage into the hands. Cover the hands with cotton gloves or small plastic bags overnight.

- Vitamin E oil. Rub into the hands until it is absorbed 2-3 times daily. (You can open a Vitamin E capsule if you don't have the oil).
