Guard charged for assaulting alleged thief
A security guard employed to Captain's Bakery in Portmore, St Catherine, who reportedly caught one of his colleague stealing from their employer, is now facing assault charge arising from the incident.
Stanley Ashman from Portmore is charged by the police for assaulting Donavan Dale, whom he allegedly caught stealing a quantity of goods from the outlet. Dale has subsequently been charged with simple larceny by the Waterford police.
When the matter was mentioned in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court last Thursday, attorney-at-law Jermaine Reid, representing Ashman, clamed that his client should not be charged.
Reid said it was unfortunate that Ashman was doing his lawful job to protect his employer's property, and is now facing a criminal charge.
Allegation before the court is that in August last year, Ashman caught Dale stealing meats and other items from the outlet. Ashman, the court heard, accosted and held Dale with the items and handed him over to the police.
Dale was subsequently charged by the police in December. He then reported that he was assaulted by Ashman during the time he was held by the security guard. Both accused men's bails were extended until March 16, 2016.
