Schizophrenic man remanded

January 18, 2016

A man's mental state was the reason for the him being remanded when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Giovanni Francis is charged with wounding with intent.

Francis' lawyer appealed for the accused to be released from custody.

But Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said the accused, who is facing another charge, is a danger to others.

"He has a schizophrenic condition and has violent tendencies when he smokes, so I cannot give him bail," said Pusey.

The accused pleaded with the court to be given bail, claiming that he would not be smoking if he is released on bail.

But RM Pusey was not moved and ordered the accused to return to court on February 5. The allegations were not read out in court.
