Man rapes 7-year-old girl - To be senteced next week
A jury retired for 80 minutes and returned an unanimous guilty verdict on a St Catherine man who sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl four years ago.
The matter was concluded in the St Catherine Circuit Court recently.
The 34-year-old man, Mark Gacoul, who is from Gregory Park, was ordered remanded and will be sentenced on January 27, 2016.
The trial lasted for five days before Justice Lorna Shelly Williams, with evidence from several witnesses.
The Crown led evidence that on February 11, 2011, the complainant, then seven years old, went to visit a relative when the accused lured her inside a room where he sexually assaulted her.
Relatives of the child saw her behaving strangely, and initial checks resulted in the police being contacted.
A subsequent report was made to the Caymanas police in St Catherine, and an investigation was launched, which resulted in Gacoul being charged with carnal abuse.
Justice Williams was assisted by Crown Counsel Shauna Milwood-Moore and Registrar Nicole Kellier.
