Man accused of smuggling cocaine remanded
A man caught attempting to leave Jamaica with more than four pounds of cocaine was remanded when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The accused, Yohan Thompson, is charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine and attempting to export cocaine. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The court heard that, on January 24, Thompson arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport with intentions of boarding a flight to Canada.
However, sniffer dogs alerted the police to Thompson's suitcase, and, when searched, a false compartment was found containing 4.5 pounds of cocaine.
In court, Thompson's lawyer claimed his client was not aware the substance was in his suitcase. Thompson was denied bail and is to return to court today.
