Westmoreland pastor formally charged
A pastor held in connection with the illicit lottery scamming trade, will appear in court next month.
Tariq Mahabeir, a pastor of Coke Street in the parish of Westmoreland, was formally charged by detectives attached to the Westmoreland Proactive Investigation Unit, the Corporate Communication Unit reported on Monday night.
Mahabeir has been charged for breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transaction) (Special Provision) Act.
The police said he was offered bail in the sum of $250,000 and is set to appear before the Savanna-la-Mar Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, March 22 where he will answer to the charge of being in possession of identity information.
Mahabeir was arrested following an investigation that was launched on Wednesday, January 27 after a search of a room he occupied at his Coke Street home yielded over 50 sheets of paper populated with the identity information of persons living overseas.
