The National Works Agency (NWA) is at this moment undertaking an investigation into a traffic pile-up along Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston.

Motorists entering downtown from Portmore and The Three Miles area experienced significant delays as the traffic backed up for miles.

The NWA had warned of traffic delays of the roadway, which is being rehabilitated. However,  it appears this morning's traffic jam was not anticipated.

Stephen Shaw, manager of communications and customer service at the NWA, told The STAR a short while ago that he was heading to the work site to get an understanding of why the traffic flow was severely affected this morning.

A US$20.5 million contract has been signed between the Government and contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company Limited for approximately 2½ kilometres of roadway between East Avenue and Harbour Street to be widened.

When completed, the number of lanes on the road will be increased from four to six.
