Blood Bank to host Donorfest on June 14

June 07, 2016

The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), popularly known as the Blood Bank, is appealing for support to register at least 150 Voluntary Blood Donors at "Donorfest"; its annual event to mark World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) on June 14, 2016.

The event will be held at Emancipation Park in New Kingston, from 8 a.m. to 7p.m.

This year`s theme `Blood connects us all`, highlights the sharing and connection between blood donors and patients and seeks to motivate people in good health, particularly young people, to be regular donors.

Acting Director of the NBTS, Dr Veronica Taylor said "the theme emphasised that voluntary blood donation should be viewed as a community effort to save lives". Dr Taylor also encourages persons to give blood outside of times of emergencies and not just for family members.

She expressed the hope that persons would embrace the WBDD slogan 'Share life, give Blood' and come out in their numbers to Emancipation Park on June 14. The blood collection target for "Donorfest" is at least 100 units of blood. As a result of this event there will be no blood collection at Slipe Pen Road on that day. To prepare adequately for blood donation and to reduce the possibility of deferral, Dr Taylor is encouraging persons to become familiar with the eligibility requirements which include increasing their intake of iron-rich foods and Vitamin C.

The importance of pursuing healthy lifestyle practices in order to become eligible donors is also the reason "Donorfest" stages a wellness fair alongside the blood drive.
