Man held with ganja at airport

A Jamaican national was arrested and charged after he was held with 17 pounds of compressed ganja as he attempted to board a flight at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston last Tuesday.

Charged with breaches of the Dangerous Drug Act is 28-year-old Michael Preddie, of Fairfield district in Spur Tree, Manchester.

Reports from the NMIA Police Post are that about 9:16 p.m., officers were carrying out checks with the assistance of a narcotics canine when they were alerted to a suitcase. The accused was summoned and asked to identify his luggage. It was searched and the ganja found. It has an estimated street value of $102,000.

He is scheduled to appear before the St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday.
