Grange outlines actions following INSPORTS fire

June 23, 2016

Sport Minister, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, has written to the Chairman of Independence Park Limited (IPL), Mike Fennell, outlining actions to be taken in response to Tuesday's fire at the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS), which occupies a section of the IPL complex.

“I have been advised that this fire is only the most recent in a series of fires which has occurred in that building over the last five years. It is my responsibility as Minister to take all the necessary precautionary actions to ensure the safety and well-being of those who occupy and those persons who have occasion to use the building,” Minister Grange said. "It is important that the IPL undertakes this course of action in the interest of protecting its reputation.”

Against such background and the fact that the Ministry has not yet received a report from the Fire Department, the Sport Minister requested that the following actions be taken by the IPL:

* A reputable firm or individual is to be contracted to carry out a thorough inspection and assessment of the electrical installation and works in the building occupied by INSPORTS. Following the assessment, a comprehensive report should be generated and submitted with appropriate recommendations for further action.

* The section of the building occupied by INSPORTS and a few Sporting Associations be closed to all personnel – with the exception of the police, as of Monday. Thereafter, absolutely no one is to be allowed access to that building for any reason, without first gaining the prior written approval of the Ministry.
Minister Grange also indicated that the Ministry will work closely with those affected as a result of the implementation of these actions.
