Phillips attends World Bank-funded Investments Workshop in Guyana
Opposition Spokesman on Finance and Planning Dr Peter Phillips will be participating in a World Bank-funded workshop on “strengthening country systems for better investment results,” from tomorrow to Thursday in Georgetown, Guyana.
Dr Phillips has been invited as a representative from Jamaica in his capacity as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.
The regional workshop is being hosted by the Caribbean Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions. The workshop aims to improve the ability of Caribbean countries to more effectively implement capital investment projects and promote development. It seeks to do so by increasing the capacity of Caribbean countries, their systems and institutions with particular focus on external accountability, legislative oversight and public procurement.
Specifically, the workshop is designed to equip Caribbean Parliaments with the tools to carry out more effective budget reviews, improve the technical capabilities of supreme audit institutions to audit capital projects, improve the regulatory framework for government procurement, and create mechanisms for citizen participation by way of feedback.
