The police are now investigating a case of negligence against one its members whose service pistol was stolen from her in St Catherine on the weekend.

It is reported that on Saturday, the police constable, who is stationed in St James, accompanied colleagues to function at Job Lane in Spanish Town.

Information reaching The Star is that she left her service pistol inside a motor car and went to use a restroom. When she returned, it was observed that thieves had broken into the vehicle and had stolen the firearm. Police confirmed that other personal effects were also stolen from the vehicle.

The matter was reported to the Spanish Town police and an investigation was launched.

Just two weeks ago, the police commissioner warned that the police will discontinue safeguarding firearms at Jamaica's airports on behalf of gun owners. The commissioner explained that it has become challenging to store private guns at the facilities as there was an exponential increase in the number of licensed firearm holders travelling daily and leaving their weapons there.
