... Cricket fan over moon after winning US$500 at CPL match

Late-evening showers threatened an early end to Wednesday's Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match at Sabina Park. The prayers started going up for God's intervening hands.

Steven Gidarsingh was among those praying. But this was not so much because of the cricket. He had his eyes fixed on winning the Hero Fan of the Match prize of US$500.

"A Father God give me the blessing because as me reach out of the car rain started to fall and the people dem a say, 'Spiderman' you wet. Yuh and yuh web gwaan up inna the roof," Gidarsingh said.

As fate would have it, the showers stopped and the cricket match between the Jamaica Tallawahs and Barbados Trident took place.

Gidarsingh, however, was determined to be the star of the party. Dressed in his Spiderman suit, he did all kinds of antics and ensured that the television cameras focused on him.

"Me a plan for it for the week before, so I got the suit from overseas," Gidarsingh told THE WEEKEND STAR.

"Me get it and tell miself say me a go win on the last night. Me tell everybody a me yard me a go win because me say me a go buy them nuff alcohol and them affi go drink it off without chaser," he added.

The CPL launched the Hero Fan of the Match initiative to reward fans who made the most imaginative effort to dress up and bring to life the cricket matches.

invest in career

Gidarsingh said he specifically requested the Spiderman because "Superman dead, and it is the first time Spiderman a come to the Caribbean".

Having won the US$500, Gidarsingh said he would be using the money to invest in his career as an entertainer. Disclosing that he is called DJ Fresh X in entertainment circles, Gidarsingh said he travels throughout the Caribbean and the Bahamas playing music.

He said, too, that donning the Spiderman suit was as much about winning the money as it was about promoting his entertainment career.

"I see myself as one of the most successful young DJ in the industry, new DJ in the music business and one of the most powerful DJ, most energy," said Gidarsingh when asked where he sees himself in the next 10 years.

"I'm an entertainer. I will always be entertaining the world, and I know what to do to entertain the crowd or the people," Gidarsingh added.
