Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller and Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is more than $100 million wealthier than Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller.

Simpson Miller, who like Holness is a career politician, has released public copies of her filings to the Integrity Commission which show that her net worth is just under $15 million. Holness has declared assets amount to $152 million in 2016 and liabilities of $34.4 million.

"All my life, I have worked hard and lived within my means," Simpson Miller said. "I came into politics with very little and the assets I have acquired were through savings and sticking to a modest lifestyle," added Simpson Miller, who has been a member of parliament since 1976.

The woman, who shortly after becoming Prime Minister in 2006 declared "My husband gives me a credit card" in response to criticisms about her frequent foreign trips, became a member of parliament when Holness was four years old.

Patrick Atkinson, Simpson Miller's attorney, told THE STAR yesterday that Simpson Miller's report to the Integrity Commission gives a true indication of her financial status.

"Any other report is pure speculation. There has been all kind of rumours suggesting how wealthy she was, but this party leader is not the wealthy one," he said.

Asked what he made of US website reporting that Simpson Miller has a net worth of US$20 million, Atkinson said: "I have no idea where they got that from, but it has nothing to do with reality".
