Elderly woman on assault charge freed
A senior citizen who was charged with attacking an employee of Tax Administration of Jamaica (TAJ) was freed in the St Catherine Parish Court on Monday.
She is Vinette Gordon, a 61-year-old retiree of Sydenham in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
When Gordon appeared before Parish Judge Natalee Brooks, she was told that the Crown had failed to prove its case against her.
This was after Gordon's attorney convinced the court that the employee fell over a chair, and that his client did not hit her.
The Crown heard evidence from four witnesses that on February 24, 2014, Gordon went to do business at the TAJ Twickenham Park office in St Catherine.
It is said that she became angry and abusive to employees after disputing the amount of money to license her motor vehicle. It was further alleged that during the heated confrontation, Gordon grabbed several chairs and flung them at employees, hitting the female complainant in the process.
Gordon was arrested and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.
Prior to being freed, the accused made numerous court appearances and maintained her innocence throughout.
