Woman shot, firearms seized in Westmoreland

One AK-47 assault rifle and one shotgun, along with several rounds of ammunition, were seized by the Westmoreland police during a confrontation with gunmen in Jerusalem Mountain in the parish yesterday. One woman was also shot and injured during the incident.

Reports are that about 2:15 a.m., a police team was in Jerusalem Mountain district in the parish when a confrontation between them and armed men ensued. One woman was subsequently seen with gunshot wounds after the shooting subsided and was taken to hospital for treatment. Lawmen on the scene carried out a search of the area where an AK-47 rifle with six 7.26 rounds and a 12-gauge shotgun with two cartridges were seized.

The Inspectorate of the Constabulary (IOC) has commenced an investigation into the incident and the matter has also been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
