Mother arrested for dumping day-old baby
A 15-year-old schoolgirl, believed to be the mother of a one-day old baby that was abandoned in a shoe box, was yesterday arrested by the police.
The police's Corporate Communications Unit last night said, "the mother is in custody," but did not provide further detail.
The day-old baby girl was found abandoned in a shoebox outside the Chapelton Hospital in Clarendon on Saturday night.
Reports are that the baby was found on the hospital's compound some time around 10 p.m. by a member of staff. The police were alerted, a report was filed, and an investigation was launched into the matter.
It is believed that after giving birth at home, the teen mother, with the help of an older relative, took the baby to the hospital ground where it was abandoned.
