Woman held for stealing sister's baby
A woman who is accused of stealing her sister's one-year-old baby, will return to the St Catherine Parish Court next week.
St Catherine resident Diandra Atkins, pleaded not guilty before Parish Judge Alicia McIntosh last week and had her bail extended until September 20, 2016.
The court heard that Atkins, who is charged with child stealing, reportedly used the baby to trick a man into believing that she had a child for him.
Court documents indicate that on the day in question, Atkins visited her sister's residence in Portmore, St Catherine. Atkins, it was revealed, reportedly convinced the child's mother to allow her to let the baby accompany her to Kingston.
The accused reportedly took the infant to St Elizabeth to meet the relatives of a man who she tricked in believing he was father of the child and she was its mother, the court alleges.
The crime was uncovered when the would-be relatives posted the child's pictures on Facebook and other social media platforms.
The child's mother managed to get in touch with the victim and his family and reported the matter to the police. An investigation was launched by Corporal Debbie Rhoden of the Portmore Police Station which resulted in Atkins being charged.
