Hurricane Matthew gains strength as it gets closer to Jamaica

The projected path of Hurricane Matthew.

Hurricane Matthew has strengthened to a strong Category 3 system and is expected to move closer to Jamaica in the next couple of days.

With maximum sustained winds of near 115 mph, Matthew became a Category 3 hurricane this morning.

At 10 a.m. the centre of Hurricane Matthew was located about 800 kilometres (475 miles) southeast of Morant Point, St Thomas.

It is expected that the centre of Matthew will remain over the south-central Caribbean Sea through Saturday before turning towards Jamaica’s territorial waters on Sunday morning.

Sea conditions associated with the hurricane will gradually deteriorate over the next 36 to 48 hours, so all small craft operators, including fishers from the cays and banks, should now be arriving in port to start preparations for safe harbour.

Weather conditions across the island are expected to be impacted by the outer bands of Matthew later on Sunday.
