Mad man blamed for burning down church
A man of unsound mind is being blamed for a fire which gutted a church on Friday, forcing its approximately 200 members to worship under a tent.
"We have a man of unsound mind who worship here sometimes, and we care for him. We received information that he went to a member and confessed to the act and said that he was sorry. We are, therefore, awaiting the police action to this new information," Pastor Wayne Smiekle told THE STAR.
The affected church is the Diamond Acres Seventh-day Adventist Church in St. Catherine. It is located at Frenchman's Heights, near Green Acres,
"The power of God is pre-eminent and we will overcome. In fact, by January we expect to be inside the new building, as this one was built of drywall," Pastor Smiekle said.
The church was insured.
"We are insured under the Adventist Risk Management System and we will be heading to the police and fire department to get the required reports to take to our insurers for assessment,so that the proper coverage arrangement can be done," Smiekle said.
The Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force yesterday confirmed the fire but said it had little information on the investigation.
Pastor Damian Chambers, director of communications for the Central Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, told THE STAR yesterday that the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen about 3:00 a.m. on Friday.
"Even before getting the insurance money, I believe there are persons there who will help to get thing back to a condition where it can be used for worship," Chambers said.
