Janique McKenzie said she is desirous of service to her country and this has motivated her to become the People's National Party standard-bearer in the Bellevue Division of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation.

She will vie for the division in the November 28 Local Government elections. He opponent is businessman Alphanso Thompson who is representing the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP)

"I want to bring a difference to the division which has been under the JLP for a number of years. I see where my approach to local governance will assist in the empowerment of those who I am elected to serve," McKenzie said.

The 29-year-old school teacher is the daughter of St Catherine Custos, the Reverend Jeffery McKenzie.

"I was raised to exhibit good deportment and sound accountability, to be dignified in whatever I find myself involved in. I intend to uphold these values in representation politics," she said.

McKenzie is currently doing a master's of science degree in food agriculture processing technology at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

She also holds a bachelor's degree in technology in agriculture production and food system management from the College of Agriculture, Science and Education.

"My approach is different. I intend to help the division through the application of skill training facilities. I will also use my training in agriculture to have persons doing various projects to empower themselves. It is like teaching them to help each other to build their community," McKenzie said.

Bellevue, which is located in the St Catherine West Central constituency, is considered safe for the JLP.

The division covers areas such as Green Acres, Ebony Vale, Fraser's Content, Fairfield Road and Johnson Pen.

The JLP won the division by 113 votes in the last local government election held in 2012. The JLP's winning margin was 590 votes in 2007 and 540 votes in 2003.
