Scores of commuters were left stranded in Spanish Town after the shooting death of a man in the business district last night. The incident, which occurred at about 7:20 p.m., resulted in motorists withdrawing their services on some routes.

The police's Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) confirmed the murder, but were unable to give the identity of the deceased.

Up to news time last night, the scene was still being processed by Scene of Crime detectives.

During the chaos last night, businesses closed their shutters earlier than usual, while customers scurried for cover.

"Bwoy, the area really tense. We are hoping that things will turn out for the best as this cannot continue because we need to sell to pay our staff," a businessman said.

The St Catherine police said the deceased was involved in the extortion racket in Spanish Town and its environs.

Reports are that he was standing near a business place at the intersection of King Street and Burke Road when he was attacked by unknown assailant/s.

As the gunman made his escape, he reportedly ran into a police party, which he allegedly challenged in a shoot-out before escaping.

It is said that the police chased the man, but he managed to elude them.
