SCQ : Westwood High defeats deCarteret College in exciting encounter
The 31st match, and third in the second round of this year's Schools' Challenge Quiz competition, saw an electrifying contest between Westwood High School and deCarteret College.
Westwood High, the all-girls institution located in Trelawny, emerged winners, amassing a total of 42 points.
The Mandeville, Manchester-based deCarteret College fell short, only able to tally 31 points.
Demar Edwards, Arianne Stephenson, Jamilla Morgan and Steven Palmer (captain) represented deCarteret College.
Palmer, gracious in defeat, commended his team for a well-played match and told THE STAR that his team fell short.
He said, "I think it was a good performance overall. We played some very good teams. Westwood was a great team actually, and I guess we just needed more time to prepare."
From the outset, however, Westwood were composed and led from the opening round.
At the end of the opening challenge, Westwood were ahead on 11 points to deCarteret College's nine.
The speed contest of the quiz was, however, full of excitement.
Heading into the buzzer section, only three points separated the two, with Westwood High 28 to deCarteret College 25.
In the buzzer section, Westwood pulled themselves from their challengers, rounding out on 42 points to deCarteret College's 31.
Westwood team members are Shanique Davidson (captain), Mikayla Goss, Marisha Williams, and Mishka Chung.
Westwood is now focused on the third round.
Davidson, who was happy to advance, expressed her delight to THE STAR after the contest.
She said, "Well, I feel very good about this victory and I think we will be prepared for round three, and it will be a very exciting match."
