US army veteran charged with murder
A United States army veteran who is charged with murder is scheduled to return to the St Catherine Parish Court on April 5. He is Duwayne Hyman of Five West in Greater Portmore, St Catherine.
Hyman is charged with the murder of Akeem Dawkins, a 23-year-old labourer of a Greater Portmore address.
Fought in Iraq
When Hyman appeared in court before Parish Judge Grace Henry-McKenzie, his lawyer Courtney Rowe told the court that his client acted in self-defence.
He told the court that Hyman was a soldier who had fought in Iraq and was honourably discharged. He, however, noted that Hyman was seen as being mentally ill. He also said his client was a victim of a vicious stone attack.
Allegations before the court are that on May 25, 2016, Hyman was being stoned by Dawkins and three other men.
It is said that the other men left, but Dawkins continued the assault during which time he was hit by the accused.
It is believed that Dawkins went home and armed himself with a machete. He later went to the area where the accused lived and attacked him.
After a physical confrontation between both men, it is said that Dawkins was seen bleeding from his upper body.
He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Hyman was subsequently charged with murder.
