Jamaican prisoners are to be allowed conjugal visits, which means they will be allowed to spend time in private with a visitor, usually their legal spouse, and engage in sexual activity.

National Security Minister, Robert Montague said  "we must begin to humanise" people in prisons.

"A lot of us talk about we are Christians but true Christianity is when you do for the least among us," the minister said.

Human Rights group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) has come out in supporting the plan to allow prisoners conjugal visits.

Spokesperson for JFJ, Susan Goffe, argued that measures to facilitate reintegration of inmates in society are important since most prisoners will eventually be released.
Goffe said that if inmates leave prisons with stronger family relationships they will be less likely to reoffend.
