Deplorable Guys Hill post office closed
Residents of several districts around Guy's Hill in St Catherine have been denied the service of the post office following its closure by the health authorities.
The facility was ordered closed by the St Catherine Health Department since August 31, because of dilapidated conditions.
It was revealed to THE STAR that after a prolonged set of warnings and notices by the health department, which started as far back as March 2016, there was no improvement to the situation. Therefore, closure was recommended.
The conditions at the 50-odd-year-old building was very deplorable, with a part of the roof caved in, which resulted in leaks. Floor boards had fallen out and the building was infested by rats.
The post office, which sits in the centre of the rural township, serves St Mary and St Catherine.
The closure has resulted in the five employees now being idle. Residents are also greatly inconvenienced.
Councillor for the Guy's Hill division, Leroy Dunn, said "This new development has affected residents and other persons alike as it (the post office) serves many different communities due to its geographic location.
"This locality even serves persons in Highgate, St Mary, therefore, it is really needed at this time and we hope the problem is fixed urgently. We are going to have a meeting with the Community Development Committee to see the way forward," Dunn said.
He told THE STAR that he had made representation to no avail, and that he is just waiting to see the next step as the Guy's Hill community needs the postal services badly.
"This will find persons going to Linstead to access their mail. This is very sad as there are pensioners and other elderly individuals who depend on the facility to communicate," a resident, Samuel Thompson, said.
