Back-to-school gifts for Buff Bay Valley students
Sixteen students from six schools in the Buff Bay River Valley area of Portland were recipients of back-to-school gifts from the Buff Bay River Valley Educational Foundation at a presentation ceremony at the Jamaica Bible Church in Rose Hill on Thursday, August 10.
Receiving cash gifts were Asha Williams (Avocat Primary and Junior High); Abigail Beckford (Birnamwood Primary); Kimberly Smith (Cascade Primary and Infant); Nicholas McPherson (Charles Town Primary); Samantha Moody (Fairfield Primary); and Davica Wilson (Tranquility Primary and Infant). Students receiving school supplies were Brittany Markland and Shemoi Richards (Tranquility); Demarco Walker (Fairfield); Serena White (Charles Town); Makayala Dennis and Magnificent Green (Cascade); Janeal Chamberlain and Shana-Kay Thomas (Birnamwood); and Eurica Ashley and Odaric Barnes (Avocat).
For the third year since its inception, students were selected on the basis of their performance and awarded by the foundation, set up by returning residents Osmond Walsh and his wife Blossoma.
In her address, guest speaker Winnifred Johnson used verses from Children Learn What They Live to urge parents, guardians and teachers to pay careful attention to how they responded to children and conducted themselves.
