Gravedigger killed in cemetery
Investigators in St Ann are searching for a man who is believed to be of unsound mind, and the prime suspect in the murder of an elderly man who was stabbed last Saturday in Ocho Rios.
The deceased man, who has since been identified as 76-year-old William Patterson, is a gravedigger of Harrison Town in the parish.
Reports reaching THE STAR is that about 12:30 p.m., Patterson was in the process of digging a grave at a cemetery near the resort town when he was attacked.
Our news team gathered that the suspect allegedly calls a section of the cemetery home, however, since the incident he has not been seen or heard from.
THE STAR understands that someone stumbled on Patterson's body and alerted the police.
He was pronounced dead at hospital.
Mentally ill persons
The Corporate Communications Unit confirmed reports of the stabbing and told THE STAR that the investigations are ongoing.
The incident has reportedly left many people in shock and renews the call for mentally ill persons to be removed from the streets.
A family friend of Patterson told our news team: "Is a mason. Him build grave and dem something deh. More time him have him second with him. It sad that di elder drop out like that. What will come out of it? Is a madman dem a look for."
October is Mental Health Month and World Mental Health Day was observed on October 10.
Last week, a mentally ill man was in the news after he was shot to death at the 100 Man Police Station in Greater Portmore.
Reports reaching THE STAR is that he entered the police station and attacked a policeman with a knife and was shot repeatedly.
The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched a probe into that killing.
