Man steals JUTC bus door
A judge was left scratching her head yesterday when a man appeared before her accused of stealing a door for a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus.
What exactly the thief, Nicholas McCalla, 31, of East Kingston, intended to do with the door is a mystery.
"Not that I am encouraging anyone to go thief, but if you are going to thief supme, why a JUTC bus door,?" Senior Parish Judge Simone Wolfe Reese asked.
McCalla did not respond even as Wolfe Reese appeared dumbfounded.
'... YOU LIKE DOORS'
"What is so special about a JUTC bus door? Maybe you like doors, I don't know. Who was going to take that off of you?"
The court heard that on May 20, McCalla jumped the wall of JUTC Rockfort depot and stole the door off a bus.
McCalla's lawyer told the court that the bus door is valued at $397,570, and the and cost or replacing is $607,644.
Wolfe Reese sentenced McCalla to nine months' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.
Radcliffe Lewis, franchise and revenue protection manager, at the JUTC, said that derelict buses that are parked at the depot are targeted by thieves who strip them for copper wire which is sold to the scrap-metal trade.
