Inmate killed while trying to escape
An inmate who was serving a life sentence at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre was shot and killed when he tried to escape custody, while on a medical visit to the National Chest Hospital in St Andrew yesterday afternoon.
According to the Department of Correctional Services, Kevin Anthony Fletcher, who was convicted of murder, was in the process of being treated by a doctor who asked that the handcuffs be removed. After the handcuffs were taken off, Fletcher tried to escape.
Further reports suggest that Fletcher ran off and was chased by wardens who opened fire. Fletcher was hit and fell into a gully.
His body was retrieved and he was pronounced dead by doctors.
