Bikers dating death in Westmoreland
Westmoreland continues to account for the bulk of motorcyclists who have died in traffic crashes. Since the start of the year, 86 motorcyclists have perished on the roads, 22 of whom are from Westmoreland.
Statistics from the Road Safety Unit also reveal that 44 motorcyclists have died in western parishes. Hanover recorded 12 such deaths, St James has recorded six and St Elizabeth four. No motorcyclists have died in crashes in Trelawny.
Motorcyclists traversing the nation's roads are being urged to wear their helmets and other protective devices to protect against major injuries and possible fatalities in the event of a crash.
The call comes as motorcyclists account for 30 per cent of road users killed in motor vehicle crashes since the start of the year.
In 2016, the unit recorded 85 motorcyclists' deaths when compared to a similar period this year. Westmoreland and St Elizabeth recorded the highest number of motorcyclists' deaths in 2016, with 32 and 11, respectively.
Since the start of the year, 290 persons have been killed from 263 fatal crashes.
