Violent crimes surpass 3,000 mark

More than 3,800 cases of violent crimes, including shooting and murder, have been recorded in Jamaica since the start of the year.

According to police data, 1,562 persons were murdered as at last Saturday, some 20 per cent more than the corresponding period last year.

The data also show that there were 1,421 cases of shooting, 429 cases of rape, and 393 cases of aggravated assault.

The police define aggravated assault as crimes relating to felonious wounding, assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, and wounding with intent that do not involves a gun.
