Gunman kills three-year-old girl
Grief has gripped the community of Cane Lane in Annotto Bay, St Mary, after a three-year-old girl was shot and killed by an unknown assailant on Wednesday night.
According to reports, the child, who has been identified as Kelecia Matthews, whose nickname is Pooka, was walking home with her stepfather at about 9: 40 p.m. when a man armed with a handgun fired a shot in their direction.
HIT COMMUNITY HARD
Kelecia, who was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest after the shooting, was rushed to the hospital.
However, she passed away as a result of the injuries she received.
Head of the St Mary Police Division Deputy Superintendent Bobette Morgan said that the police do not have a suspect at the moment.
"The family is taking it very hard, very bad, and based on my information, the community is taking it very hard. But we are hoping that somebody will be able to tell us who the perpetrator is. But until then, we just have to continue to do our investigations," she told THE WEEKEND STAR.
However, she stressed that she doesn't believe Kelecia was the target of the attack.
"It is highly likely that the stepfather was the target because I don't think anybody would be targeting a three-year-old at that time of the night with guns," she explained.
Although she is not familiar with Cane Lane, Morgan said that the Annotto Bay area has been a trouble spot for some time.
