Off-duty cop kills would-be robber, injures another

A policeman got the better of two unknown men who attempted to rob him on Tuesday night in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, fatally shooting one in the process.

THE STAR understands that the second man also received gunshot wounds and remains in hospital in serious condition, under police guard.

Reports are that at about 8:30 p.m., the off-duty policeman was in his personal motor vehicle along Lewis Street when a motorcycle with two men drove up.

Our news team gathered that a shoot-out ensued after the pillion rider reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and demanded that the cop hand over his phone.

A woman who was standing in the vicinity was shot in the ankle.

Up to press time, the dead man was still unidentified. The policeman's private motor car was reportedly extensively shot up during the gun battle.

The police said a Smith and Wesson revolver was taken from one of the gunmen.

THE STAR gathered that the Independent Commission of Investi-gations has commenced a probe into the incident.
