Two in custody for killing student
The St Catherine police have held two persons in connection with Monday's fatal stabbing of a student of the Bog Walk High School in the parish.
Up to press time, the suspects were not charged.
Kavaughn Barnes, 16, was killed, while a schoolmate was stabbed and injured.
Reports from the Bog Walk police are that at about 3:10 p.m., Barnes and 17-year old Ishmael Richards were walking along the roadway when they were attacked by a group of men who inflicted stab wounds on the teens.
Both teens were assisted to the Linstead Hospital where Barnes was pronounced dead and Richards admitted.
Assistant Superintendent Dahlia Garrick, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), confirmed the incident and subsequent arrest with our news team.
THE STAR understands that the incident stemmed from a long-standing dispute.
Investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry sent a trauma team to Bog Walk High.
In a release sent to THE STAR, the team was dispatched on Monday afternoon and returned to the school yesterday morning to continue grief counselling sessions with the staff and students.
School principal Patrick Phillips said Barnes was in the Alternative Pathways to Secondary Education programme and was actively involved in class activities.
Phillips said his death has greatly impacted the school especially his identical twin brother, who is also a student at the institution.
