Church sister fights off gunman
A gunman who tried to abduct a woman who was on her way home from church, and then engaged the police in a running gun battle through the streets of Montego Bay, is now in custody, facing multiple charges.
The accused is 20-year-old Ricardo Vassell of a Providence Heights address in Flanker.
He is facing charges of armed robbery, assault, shooting with intent, and illegal possession of a firearm.
According to reports, at about 10:30 p.m., a woman was walking home after a church meeting at the City Centre Building, when she was grabbed from behind by a man who was armed with a handgun and had his face covered by a mask.
GRABBED HER BAG
The gunman tried to drag the woman in the direction of a deserted compound, but she fought him off, screaming for help as she did so.
The attacker, who was being overpowered, grabbed her handbag and fled.
Two policemen who were responding to her screams, saw the gunman running and gave chase. He responded by opening fire on them.
During a running gun battle, the man eluded the lawmen who were joined by several colleagues. During a subsequent cordon and search, he was found hiding behind a building.
"The woman brave like hell," said a vendor, who witnessed the incident. "It tek a brave woman fi fight off a bwoy with a gun inna her face. It is just a pity the police dem neva bun the thiefing bwoy skin."
Despite the ongoing state of public emergency in St James, gunmen have been targeting vendors, taxi operators and random persons who venture into areas such as Coral Wall, near the City Centre Building at nights.
