Woman charged in‘baby stealing’ case
Police investigators yesterday laid formal charges against a woman who was held with the baby who was stolen from the Victoria Jubilee Hospital on January 9.
Charged with child stealing is 28-year-old Petagay Ffrench of a Harkers Hall, St Catherine, address.
THE STAR learnt that Ffrench was positively pointed out during an identification parade yesterday.
Crime chief for Western Kingston, Inspector Phillip Dodd, confirmed the charge and suggested that other charges are pending.
"She has been charged with child stealing for now," Dodd told our news team.
According to the police, Ffrench is to face the court later this week.
Reports are that Ffrench was questioned on the weekend and allegedly told investigators she was given the child by a person in Spanish Town.
The baby, Sae'breon Hutton, was reunited with his parents last Friday. Sae'breon was confirmed as the stolen baby the day before after DNA results came back.
Ffrench was taken into custody by the Central Village police, after she turned up at the Registrar General's Department (RGD) to register the child.
Officials of the RGD became suspicious when she gave conflicting information about the child and when she gave birth; as a result, the police were alerted.
