Foreigners arrested for illegal fishing

Fifty-seven Dominican nationals have been arrested and charged by the police after they were caught fishing illegally in Jamaican waters last Saturday.

The men, who were on board two vessels, have since been charged with several offences under the Fisheries Act, 2018, which includes:

* Possession of berried lobsters

* Possession of undersized lobsters

* Possession of conch in closed season

* Fishing without a licence

* Fishing without identification

Meanwhile, the captain, chief mate and the engineer have been charged with using a vessel as a processing plant without the permission of the Agriculture Minister and operating a motor vessel within Jamaican territorial waters without a licence.

An application has also been made for the vessels to be forfeited as well as other equipment, lobster and conch.
