Detectives attached to the Montego Bay Freeport Criminal Investigation Branch say they have now laid murder charges against a 27-year-old construction worker, who was being sought in connection with the murder of another man in April.

Facing charges of murder, assault occasioning bodily harm, and burglary is Shalando Stewart, otherwise called 'Scubbie', of a Spring Mount address, also in St James.

Stewart has been charged with the murder of Demar Barrett, of Potosi district in St Johns, St James, who he allegedly shot before partially severing his head.

Reports by the police are that on April 20, Stewart and two men armed themselves with handguns and machetes, and went to Barrett's home in search of him.

They forced their way inside the house and held Barrett's teenage brother at gunpoint, asking the whereabouts of his older brother.

Stewart and the two men tied up the teenager and then ransacked the house.

THE WESTERN STAR learnt that Barrett and his common-law wife then arrived at the house, and he was shot by the men.

His common-law wife managed to run from the premises and escaped in bushes, while the teenage boy also managed to free himself and escape.

They were assisted to the police station and a report was made. The lawmen drove to the house and found Barrett outside with his neck partially severed, and multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Stewart was apprehended during an operation in the Potosi area recently.

He was charged on the weekend with murder, and is booked to appear in the St James Parish Court later this week. The two men are still at large.
