Man of unsound mind shot in Portland
The Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) is probing the shooting of man, believed to be of a unsound mind allegedly by the police during an altercation on Monday.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police assigned to the Port Antonio police, Julio Francis, they received a report shortly after 2:00 a.m. about a man pelting stones at a house occupied by a licensed firearm holder.
Francis also said that when the police arrived at the location, they too came under attack from the man, who pelted them with stones, damaging a Mitsubishi pick-up service vehicle in the process.
"The windscreen was damaged, and the passenger side of the glass window on the service vehicle was shattered during the stone throwing incident, "said Francis.
The senior cop further added that the police in defending themselves, discharged their firearm, likewise did the license firearm holder- resulting in a single shot hitting the man in the shoulder.
The wounded man was rushed to hospital, where he was treated and admitted under police guard.
But there is still uncertainty as to whether or not it was the police or the licensed firearm holder who fired the shot that hit the man.
A team from INDECOM was present at the crime scene collecting statements from the police, while speaking to residents about the incident.
