End of round highs for promoted teams

NEWLY promoted teams ended on a high note at the end of the first round yesterday in the Red Stripe Premier League football competition.

UWI FC and Portmore both registered wins in games they hosted.

There was drama at the UWI game at UWI Mona Bowl where the hosts dismissed Tivoli Gardens 5-2 with a hat-trick from Girvan Brown. The game had to be stopped and the police called in after a disturbance.

Portmore also ended on a winning note with a 1-0 win over champions Arnett Gardens at Juici Park in Clarendon.

Jovan East landed the winner in the 25th minute for Portmore, who went winless for a while, and will be pleased with the victory heading into next week's start of second-round action.

Meanwhile, their westerly neighbours Reno went crashing to Boys' Town at the Barbican playing field.

The goal-scoring challenges Reno have faced continued as they were stopped 2-0 by hosts Boys' Town. AndrE Dawson scored both goals in the 17th and 45th minutes.

Montego Bay United trounced Rivoli United 3-0. Allan Ottey (45), Ronaldo Rodney (70), and Owayne Gordon (90+) scored the winners.

At the Waterhouse Mini Stadium, the hosts came from behind to defeat Humble Lion 2-1.

Woolry Wolfe opened the scoring for the Clarendon-based Humble Lion in minute nine before Evan Taylor levelled the score for the hosts in the 21st. Oshane Roberts sealed the deal in the 53rd for Waterhouse.

Action continues this evening as Cavalier play Harbour View at Stadium East beginning at 8:40 p.m.
