Senior amateur boxing championships start tonight

Boxers from nine gyms will take part in the Jamaica Boxing Board's National Senior Amateur Boxing Championships which start tonight at 7 p.m. and end on Saturday at the Stanley Couch Gym, on Victoria Avenue in Kingston.

There will be two categories,

- Elite and Novice - for boxers age 18 and over, and seven weight classes, ranging from lightweight to super heavyweight. The Novice category is for boxers with fewer than five bouts. The gyms participating are Stanley Couch, Bruising, G.C. Foster, Jamaica Defence Force, Heavy Metal, Sav Boxing Academy, St Thomas Boxing Club, Sugar Knockout and Seaview Gardens. Entries have also been received from four overseas boxers, two from Canada, and one each from England and the USA.

The weigh-in and medical examinations took place yesterday at the Stanley Couch gym, after which the draw took place.

Among the top boxers who will be participating are middleweights Janathan Hanson and Reece Shagourie, who resides in England, welterweights Kestna Davis, Camion Goldson and Nico Yeyo lightweight Ricardo Carter and light heavyweights Alando Lewis and Omar Campbell. Three nights of keen competition are expected.
