Holmes heads to Guyana for big fight

Richard 'Frog' Holmes, who was the runner-up this year's in the Wray and Nephew Contender Series, leaves the island today, for Georgetown, Guyana, accompanied by his coach Carl Grant, for an eight-round fight against Mark Austin on Saturday night.

Main bout on the card will be a title fight over 12 rounds between Contender champion DeMarcus Corley, and Dexter Gonzales for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Fecarbox lightweight title.

Corley, who caught the attention of boxing fans in the Caribbean with his performance in the Contender series, was selected to fight for the vacant title, following his exciting seventh round TKO victory over Holmes, on July 2 at the National Indoor Sports Centre.

Holmes who has an 11-6 record, will go up against an opponent who has a 9-8-1 record. After taking a short break following the end of the Contender series of shows in July, Holmes resumed training a month ago, and told STAR Sports yesterday that he is in good condition and is confident that he will beat Austin.
