W Connection out of Champions League
SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago’s W Connection were dumped from the CONCACAF Champions League with a game remaining, after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Honduras Progreso in their Group A game here Thursday night.
Playing at the Estadio Francisco Morazan, the Savonetta Boys succumbed to Victor Moncada’s first half goal, to crash to their second loss in three outings and watch their chances of advancing disappear.
They lie bottom of the group on a single point with Progreso top on seven points and Mexican outfit Club Universidad Nacional second on six.
W Connection’s fate followed that of fellow Trinidadian club, Central FC, who were also eliminated from the competition on Wednesday after a 4-1 defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps in Group C.
Entering the game hoping to keep their qualification hopes alive especially after drawing with Progreso in their opening game last August, W Connection suffered an early setback when Moncado netted in the 18th minute.
Down 0-1 at half-time, W Connection rallied in the second half and twice came close to levelling the scores only to be let down by poor finishing from Surinamese international Dimitrie Apai.
W Connection play Club Universidad Nacional in their final game on October 20 in Mexico City.
