Midweek race meet off

October 04, 2016
Gladstone Taylor/Freelance Photographer Apprentice Dane Dawkins stole the show at Caymanas Park last Saturday with four winners. His fourth was registered aboard BAY COMMANDER in the ninth race.

The 10-race programme scheduled for tomorrow at Caymanas Park has been abandoned because of the expected impact to the island from the dangerous hurricane, Matthew.

Denzil Miller Jr, Caymanas Track Limited's (CTL's) racing secretary, told STAR Sports yesterday that the meet had been cancelled ''due to the inclement weather".

The Monica Todd Memorial Cup for $180,000 claimers and the Fountainbleu Trophy for Open Allowance horse were the two trophy races down to be contested.

This is the third time a race meet is being abandoned at Caymanas Park this year. The first two cancellations were due to industrial action taken by staff at the track.

On February 6, the local race card was abandoned a few hours before its 12 noon post time after the workers and management of CTL met up to midnight the day before and failed to reach an agreement on wage talks.

On August 13, a 12-race meet was called off following an impasse between the promoting company CTL and unionised workers from the engineering department. That programme would have featured the inaugural running of the $1 million Front Runner Dash for maiden and untried two-year-olds, sponsored by Newport Mills Limited.

Racing is scheduled to resume on Saturday, October 8.
