UWI continue hot RSPL start
The University of the West Indies FC continued their impressive early season form in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) when they whipped seasoned campaigners Boys' Town FC 4-0 at the UWI Bowl in Mona yesterday.
UWI's captain Rochane Smith scored a brace in the 7th and 74th minutes to lead his team to victory, while Dawyne Smith (54th), and Anthony Greenland (79th) scored the other goals.
The win pushed UWI to 19 points from eight games as they maintained the top spot in only their second season in the 12-team top flight competition. It was UWI's fifth consecutive win as they continue to make their mark in the league.
Smith is also the competition's leading goalscorer on six goals.
Boys' Town's woes continued as they were losing for the fifth time this season to be on four points.
In another game, neighbouring rivals Waterhouse and Maverley-Hughenden battled to a 1-1 draw at Drewsland Stadium. Maverley-Hughenden went ahead when Phillip Peddie scored in the 10th minute. However, that strike was cancelled when Waterhouse's substitute Kemar Beckford hit back in the 54th minute.
Maverley-Hughenden moved to nine points, while Waterhouse inched to seven points.
Tivoli Gardens ambushed newcomers Jamalco 2-1 at the Wembley Centre of Excellence. Tivoli improved to 10 points from seven games, while Jamalco remained on 10 points from eight games.
The scheduled game between reigning champions Montego Bay United and former champions Arnett Gardens was not played due to a water-logged field at Wes Pow Park.
The matches were those originally scheduled for Sunday, October 2, which were postponed because of the threat of Hurricane Matthew.
